Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics is the branch of dental medicine that deals with the substitution of one or more teeth with a prosthesis so to restore teeth functionality, but also the aesthetics of the mouth.
Prosthodontics are divided into:
Fixed prosthodontics
Mobile prosthodontics
Fixed prosthodontics
In the case of tooth loss it is necessary to proceed with prosthesis’ placement, but there are also other cases in which crowns veneers or bridges are used. All these elements are considered fixed prostheses. Substituting missing teeth is of extreme importance to maintain correct chewing and pronunciation, but also for preserving the aesthetics of the mouth.
Various materials are used within dental prosthodontics, so apart from the classic metal-ceramics , used for fixed prosthesis, today we can choose ceramics without metal support and zirconium. Each of these materials offers different possibilities and particular aesthetic effects, so ceramic without metal support is more suitable for front teeth, Ωveneers and crowns , as it offers the best aesthetics.
Mobile prosthodontics
Mobile prosthesis are usually used in the case of total tooth loss or in those cases where the remaining teeth do not allow for fixed prosthodontic methods.
In both cases it is imperative to provide the patient with a mobile prosthesis as it allows correct chewing and pronunciation, but also for aesthetics, fundamental for self-perception and an overall better quality of life. In cases of partial tooth loss it is import to place a partial prosthesis which will prevent movements of the remaining teeth.
The materials used for mobile prosthesis are getting more and more sophisticated, with care being taken to assure functionality, compatibility with mouth tissue and fast patient adaptation. Modern materials replicate perfectly the colour and structure of the tooth, contributing to a natural look of the prosthesis.
